Sarah Cockrell Collection

Known as Dallas’s first capitalist, Sarah Horton Cockrell was born in Virginia onJanuary 13, 1819, to Enoch and Martha Horton. In 1844, Sarah moved to Texas, andafter her marriage to Alexander Cockrell in 1847, became a resident of Dallas County.Alexander’s business endeavors included a construction business, sawmill, gristmill,and rental space for business firms – all of which Sarah contributed to by maintainingthe records, managing the finances, and handling correspondence.
