Virtual Tour of Downtown Dallas

Mercantile Bank Building

Return to Virtual Tour Return to Virtual Tour Map

Modern, 1941-1943. Construction began in 1941 and completed in 1943. It was the only major office building erected in Dallas during the war. Thirty-three stories high, it replaced the Magnolia Building as the city's tallest skyscraper and the tallest building west of the Mississippi. It reflected Robert L. Thornton's traditional values, for it was constructed of masonry, the last such skyscraper built in Dallas, although its architecture style was modern. The Mercantile building was replaced as the city's tallest building in 1954 by the Republic National Bank building The building is built on the site of a former landmark of the city, the old post office, which was torn down in 1939 to make room for the Mercantile. Architects of the building were Donald S. Nelson and Walter W. Ahlschlager.
