Virtual Tour of Downtown Dallas

Majestic Theatre

Return to Virtual Tour Return to Virtual Tour Map

Renaissance Revival, 1922. Located at 1925 Elm Street, the theater was constructed by Karl Hoblitzelle, who had come to Dallas after the St. Louis World's Fair to make his fortune in the entertainment business. It is the only visible reminder of the days when Elm Street was filled from one end to the next with motion picture houses. The Majestic originally showed both movies and vaudeville acts, but soon became entirely devoted to pictures. The Majestic was the grandest of all the buildings downtown and in 1977 was donated to the city. It is now used for musical shows, dramatic presentations, and other special events. The architect was John Eberson of Chicago. It had its grand opening in 1922, with spotlights and couples arriving by limousine, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was proclaimed the finest theater in the entire world, and its interior, as well as its exterior, is indeed a beautiful sight.
