Braniff Airways History: The Dallas Connection

  • 1929 (July) Braniff Airlines, a division of the Universal Air Lines System, inaugurated flights to Dallas, via Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls.

  • 1934 (May 17) Braniff Airways inaugurated passenger and air mail service to Dallas, via Kansas City and Tulsa.

  • 1942 Braniff relocated its administrative, finance, and legal offices from Oklahoma City to Dallas.

  • 1958 Braniff International Airways moved to three new Dallas facilities. In January they began operations at the recently constructed Love Field Terminal on Cedar Springs. In February they moved their corporate headquarters to Exchange Park, west of Love Field. In December they occupied a new 400,000 sq. ft. service hangar facility on Lemmon Avenue.

  • 1968 The colorful new Braniff Terminal at Love Field opened in December

  • 1970 Braniff inaugurated its unique "Jetrail" service at Love Field. The brightly colored monorail system connected the remote parking facility with the main ticketing area in the terminal.

  • 1974 (January) Braniff relocated its operations to Terminal 2W at the new 17,500 acre Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. The airline maintained the largest area of operations.

  • 1978 (December) On their fiftieth anniversary of operations, Braniff moved to new corporate headquarters, known as Braniff Place, just west of DFW Airport. The sprawling four-story campus contained corporate offices and training facilities, a data center, recreation facilities, and a hotel.

  • 1981 Braniff introduced a special charter B-727 painted in a distinct "Dallas Cowboys" color scheme as part of their "Texas Class" service promotion.

  • 1989 In conjunction with a corporate reorganization, the company announced plans to relocate headquarters to Orlando, Florida. The Dallas period had passed.
