Brown's History of Dallas, 1887

Brown's History of Dallas

Cover of John Henry Brown's History of Dallas County from 1837 to 1887.
L91.6.6
Harlan Crow Collection

Written by a noted Texan journalist and historian, this was the first book published on the history of Dallas and Dallas County.

Brown's work is the starting point for anyone interested in learning how and why Dallas was established. He thought the history of each locality had to be preserved in order to create "an admirable pride" in its citizens.

Despite errors, Brown's History includes a wealth of information and points out crucial elements in Dallas' development including the importance of the Peters Colony Company in bringing immigrants to the region and the role that transportation improvements played in opening the region's agricultural riches to distant markets.

For more on John Henry Brown, check out the biographical article on him at the New Handbook of Texas website.
