Prohibition: The leading headline on August 1, 1917, warned of the coming of prohibition, "Senate Passes Pro Measure." The article stated that "[a] resolution to the states of a prohibition amendment to the federal constitution was adopted late today by the senate. The vote was 65 to 20, eight more than the necessary two-thirds. As adopted the resolution contains a provision that the states must be asked to ratify the amendment within six years. The house must act on the resolution."

The War: Many young men from Dallas heeded the call to join the war effort. Among them was Carl P. Petrini, Jr, who had enlisted early in the spring of 1917. The August 1, 1917, issue of the Daily Times Herald reported that his parents had received a postcard from him with the news that he was currently on board the battleship Olympia.

Dallasites who stayed home did their part for the war effort too. A camp was to be set up in Fair Park for soldiers not yet sent to Europe. August 1917 news accounts told of the plans for the camp.; Also, according to the August 2, 1917, issue of DTH, a fund-raiser for Battery B's mess fund was going to be held at the Hippodrome Theater the following Friday night.
