Color in the Sky: 1966 - Pucci II

1966 Flight Attendant Uniform

Between 1965 and 1974, Emilio Pucci created a continuous series of uniforms for the Braniff hostesses. In the summer of 1966, "Pucci II" made its appearance. This new body-hugging tunic and leotard served as an alternative to the previous blue tunic and culottes combination. The prints Pucci utilized were exclusive to Braniff. The print in Pucci II symbolized all the nations of the world that served as Braniff ports of call.

The new tunic and leotard were a popular choice for hostesses flying Braniff's PAC-MAC (Pacific Military Airlift Command) flights to the South Pacific and Southeast Asia where the pink wool uniform proved uncomfortable. Braniff Airways responded to national defense needs during the Sixties by providing military transport to both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operations.

Hostesses flying the PAC-MAC routes were based in San Francisco. Their tours of duty lasted between two and twelve days with an average of six days. The airline maintained offices at Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California. At the airlift's peak prior to 1972, Braniff had 175 hostesses rotating the South Pacific flights.
