Dallas History Timeline: The 1960s

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson (pictured, left) was sworn in as president aboard Air Force One at Dallas' Love Field.

1962 - Daily jet service from Dallas Love Field to Europe is inaugurated.

1963 - President John F. Kennedy is assassinated while riding in a motorcade through downtown Dallas.

1964 - Dallas leads the world as headquarters for million dollar oil companies (120).

1965 - NorthPark Center opens.

1966 - El Centro College opens in downtown Dallas as the first campus of the Dallas Community College District. Dallas County Heritage Society is formed to save Millermore, the largest remaining antebellum mansion in Dallas. Joseph Lockridge becomes first African-American elected to Texas Legislature from Dallas.

1967 - Dallas adopts a new city flag, replacing the 1916 design. Dr. Emmett Conrad is first African-American elected to Dallas School Board.

1969 - Ninety-seven years of continuous passenger train service from Dallas come to an end. Millermore opens as the first restored historic structure in City Park. Anita N. Martinez becomes the first Hispanic elected to the Dallas City Council.

1970 - Population of Dallas is 844,401.
