In 1952, Braniff International Airways introduced coordinating winter uniforms for both its pilots and hostesses. The hostess uniforms continued the tradition of military-inspired uniforms adopted during the 1940s. Between 1942 and 1951, American couture designer, Mainbocher, created distinct tailored styles for the American WAVES (US Navy), American Girl Scouts, American Red Cross, and US Women's Marine Corps. Women's aviation uniforms of the period faithfully repeated his designs.
The new winter uniform consisted of a tailored hip-length jacket with notched pockets and a fitted skirt. In tribute, the uniform's color was named "Braniff Blue." It was worn with a white nylon blouse. Navy blue shoes and a handbag completed the ensemble. The suit was designed by Neiman-Marcus and manufactured by Brooks Tailors of Dallas.
