When it opened in 1892, Dallas County's sixth courthouse (see photograph, left) was adorned with a tower containing a clock and a three-ton bell. The tower was dismantled after World War I because of fears of structural damage from the vibrations of the bell.
1892 - Dallas' sixth courthouse, "Old Red," is completed.
1893 - Steamboat H.A. Harvey navigates Trinity from Galveston to Dallas. Dallas' first "luxury" hotel, the Oriental, opens at Commerce and Akard, later the site of the Baker Hotel.
1894 - A new public hospital, Parkland, is built near Maple and Oak Lawn.
1896 - Golf is introduced to Dallas in a cow pasture in Oak Lawn. The United Charities is organized.
1898 - The Sisters of St. Vincent de Paul open St. Paul's Hospital. Linz Bros. builds a 6-story building, the first fireproof building in Texas. The Dallas Free Kindergarten Association is formed. The Dallas Federation of Womens' Clubs is organized to work for civic reform, especially the building of a public library.
1899 - Main Street is paved with asphalt; Murphy Street is paved with brick.
1900 - First high school footbal team in Texas is formed at Dallas High School. Dallas Symphony Club performs its first concerts. Population of Dallas is 42,638
