"Trails North: The Western Heritage of Texas" Exhibit

  • Exhibition available January through August, 2008
  • One hour
  • All Grades, All Ages
  • Access to the exhibit without a docent is free.

In an effort to showcase the ranching heritage of Texas during the state’s Centennial celebration in Dallas in 1936, an exhibit of 491 branding irons sent in from all parts of the state, some representing large ranches, some representing very small operations, was organized by the Livestock Division of the Centennial. In 1936, the western heritage of Texas was still very much in evidence throughout the state. That is perhaps less true today when the majority of Texans live in cities, yet the state’s western roots still run deep. “Trails North: The Western Heritage of Texas” an exhibit opening in January, 2008 at the Hall of State will tap into those roots to showcase the western side of Texas history. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a recreation of the original 1936 Texas Cattle Brands exhibit, all of which is now part of the Historical Society’s permanent collection. The brands have not been displayed as a single exhibit since the Centennial. In addition to focusing on cowboys, cattle drives, and ranching, the exhibition will also examine many other facets of Texas and western history and popular culture. The myth and reality of the West in terms of lawmen and desperados, the life of cattle towns and frontier outposts, western fashions, and the sorts of entertainment found in the Old West will all be included. The exhibit will also include material on how the West and Texas have been portrayed in movies. (Gene Autry’s movie, “The Big Show” was actually filmed during the Centennial.) Much of the material in the exhibition will be drawn from the collections and archives of the Dallas Historical Society, along with items loaned by private collectors. A wide variety of programs, such as monthly brown bag lectures, will supplement the exhibition itself.
